It is a “bullhead” style case with an angled dial. If you aren’t familiar with the concept, it looks quite strange. The first thing you’ll notice about the Carrera Calibre 1887 Jack Heuer is the design of the case. Though his birthday model celebrates history while the Calibre 1887 model celebrates where TAG Heuer is today. The two Jack Heuer watches are thematically similar, and both equally attractive. The attractive retro looking watch was a pretty big sales success, and enough of a hit to merit a follow-up piece a year later. Last year, on the occasion of Jack’s 80th birthday, TAG Heuer released a limited edition Carrera Jack Heuer 80 watch (hands-on with Heuer interview) as a set of 3000 pieces. Now retired, Jack Heuer still serves an honorary role at TAG Heuer, and was with the brand at the time when the Carrera model was first released. The story of course begins with Jack Heuer, famed former CEO of TAG Heuer and legacy to the family. For now we’d like to focus on a hands-on look at the Carrera Calibre 1887 Jack Heuer and what makes it unique. There you’ll be able to learn more about the watch and why TAG Heuer produced it. If you ask me: Jack Heuer or concept watch? In every way, a stunning tribute to the singular vision of a pioneer in technology and design. Jack Heuer’s coat of arms and signature decorate the smoked sapphire caseback, through which can be seen the 39-jewel Calibre 1887 movement. Like the Carbon, the asymmetrical case design comes from the Carrera Mikrogirder, and the technical details from Formula One and aeronautics: black titanium carbide steel in the 45mm case, hand-brushed and polished to a high sheen polished, a fine brushed and sandblasted steel cage tachymetre and pulsometre on the dial. The TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE 1887 Jack Heuer 50th Anniversary Edition – 45mm is a stunning tribute to the CARRERA’s creator, TAG Heuer Honorary Chairman Jack Heuer. This watch is not another lightweight edition, but the little brother of the CARRERA CARBON CALIBRE 1887 CHRONOGRAPH … Total weight including the Tag Heuer Calibre 1887: 76.9 g Its extreme lightness also translates into ultimate comfort. Having passed all of TAG Heuer’s rigorous quality controls, the timepiece will also age much better than a conventional watch, with fewer scratches and signs of wear. The edges of the case middle, for example, are astonishingly detailed. The TAG Heuer manufacturing method, which until now was primarily used in F1 and aeronautics, facilitates watch production, and allows for intricate detailing and machining with fewer geometrical constraints and an exceptionally high degree of precision. The reinforced fabric, which is only 0.007mm thick, is structured to build the components into 3D form, then heated and compacted to transform by a means of a chemical reaction the soft, flexible layers into a super rigid form. The case back and bezel are made from thin carbon fibers organized as on an isotropic matrix. The fundamental difference, however, is the material used – Carbon Matrix Composite – and the extremely complicated miniaturized manufacturing process required to use it – both world firsts in the watchmaking industry. The crown and chronograph pushers are mounted at 12 o’clock, like a classic stopwatch. The Carrera Carbon Calibre 1887 Concept Chronograph shares the Mikrogirder’s distinctive asymmetrical “bullhead” case with base horns design. TAG Heuer did as Hublot and Zenith not exhibit at the SIHH, but these LVMH-brands organized their little watch presentations parallel to the SIHH … Richard Mille did it with his watch for Rafael Nadal, Audemars Piguet with the new Royal Oak Offshore Diver, IWC with the new Ingenieur, Jaeger-LeCoultre with the new Deep Sea Chronograph and Panerai with the new Submersible did it by using a super-light material to built their cases. It seems to be a real trend this year to produce lightweight watches. Come in and have a look at this watch and discover its little brother … The entire carbon case of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Calibre 1887 Concept Chronograph only weights 19 grams, the entire watch with the movement 76,9 grams.
